Global Warming: Definition, Causes And More

Global warming as the name suggests is the heating of the planet. This is one of the current problems that the whole world is experiencing. Affecting a large portion of the society and altering natural ecosystems of organisms. The world is taking tasks and programs to find a solution and to lessen this aggravating phenomenon.

What is Global Warming?

The planet receives ultraviolet radiation from the sun which heats up the planet. The ozone is a protective layer that absorbs most of the energy from ultraviolet radiation. When the ozone is destroyed, more ultraviolet radiation can enter the planet causing the planet to heat up more than usual. Also, the atmosphere is another layer around the earth that prevents ultraviolet radiation to bounce back out of the planet.

When excessive combustion occurs like in industrial companies and vehicular combustion, a large portion of the ozone gets destroyed. This is because the ozone is mostly composed of oxygen which is also an essential ingredient in combustion.

It does not end there. When combustion occurs, gasses are produced that stack on the atmosphere. The thicker the gasses that compose the atmosphere, the less likely ultraviolet radiation can bounce back to space. This results to a phenomenon called the greenhouse effect where heat can get in but cannot get out. This results to the abnormally long hotter temperatures.

What Causes Global Warming?

A number of factors contribute to global warming. The major contributor is combustion. Depending on the type of material combusted is the severity of the case. Vehicular exhausts, industrial gasses and public burning all contributes to global warming. Basically anything that can contribute to the series of greenhouse gasses can aggravate global warming.

Effects of Global Warming

The effects of global warming are not limited to the heating of the planet alone. Though to the human perspective, the only thing that this can do to us is to feel hotter than usual. The increased temperatures of the planet affect nearly everything. The largest problem that is to be considered is the melting of the polar ice caps.

Three percent of the worldís fresh water is frozen in the North and South Pole. This is a very huge amount of water. When these ice caps melt, the water levels will surely rise. This phenomenon can sink cities, low areas and the likes.

A large portion of the land area of the world has sunk due to this effect. In coastal areas in China, they have set up large walls to prevent the water from sinking productive land area. In most places, it is recognizable that sea levels increase much higher now compared to past evaluations.

Biological life is also affected. Species that are unable to adapt to the continuing rise of temperature are likely going to die. The melting of the ice caps alone causes the destruction of the homes of polar bears. In recent Arctic studies, it was observed that Polar bears are learning to survive in iceless areas. It was also seen that polar bears are migrating to less cold areas.

When there is heat, there is also ultraviolet radiation. It is known that over exposure to ultraviolet radiation can trigger and develop skin cancer. Sunlight exposure is no longer recommended during certain periods of the day when UV radiation are at its highest. It is even necessary to use protection now even if you are only going to perform a brisk walk during the afternoon.
